The Truth
Unfortunately, craftsmanship and quality are becoming increasingly rare in today’s market, and honesty is often taking a backseat. Here are some examples of misleading claims and common issues to watch for.
Companies pushing wireless alarm systems.
Wireless alarm systems were originally designed for locations where running wires wasn’t practical. Today, many companies install them everywhere simply to save time and reduce labor. Consumers are often told that wireless systems are superior to hardwired ones, when that simply isn't true. In reality, wireless systems are easier and more predictable to install for the contractor—but that convenience often comes at the client’s expense. Homeowners may need to replace 20–50 batteries every 2–3 years, deal with larger and less attractive sensors, and face significantly higher replacement costs.
Yikes!
Sadly, this is what much of today’s wiring looks like. Attention to detail and organization is often overlooked. Any future repairs or modifications to this system will require additional labor, increasing costs over the lifetime of the system.
90% of alarm technicians don't solder their wire connections!
Just twisting wires together and taping them is a recipe for false alarms in the future, but hey what does that installer care, in a couple of years the false alarms will result in chargeable service calls bringing more money their way. We've seen wires twisted tightly over an inch long having no electrical connection at all, just vibrations would cause false alarms which resulted in fines and service calls. The problem is oxidation, over time it causes a thin film on the wires causing a poor connection or none at all. Wire connections must be sealed by soldering or other proven sealing methods.
